The outer layer of electrical wires and cables is typically made of rubber or a rubber composite sheath. This layer serves two primary functions: insulation and protection against damage.
Cables are categorized as either high-voltage or low-voltage. In high-voltage cables, there is an additional layer of resin-like filler material, which serves an insulating function. In high-voltage cables, this layer is a critical component of the insulation system. Low-voltage cables do not include this layer. Additionally, there are some ribbon-like materials wrapped around the interior to secure each core of the cable and fill the gaps in the middle.
Regarding the shielding layer, there are two scenarios. The functions of the shielding layer in power cables are as follows:
1. Since power cables carry a large current, a magnetic field is generated around the current. To prevent interference with other components, the shielding layer can isolate this electromagnetic field within the cable.
2. It provides a certain degree of grounding protection. If the cable core is damaged, the leaked current can flow through the shielding layer into the grounding network, providing protective functionality.
For control cables, there are no significant differences. However, in many applications, particularly in computer systems, the shielding layer is used to block external interference. This is because the current in control cables is very weak, making them highly susceptible to external electromagnetic field interference.
